Out of all the things I wasn’t expecting to see in downtown Oakland: a pair of black crowned night herons hanging out with the pigeons. They were so still I thought they were statues at first.
It just goes to show that nature isn’t always where we expect to find it. The herons stood around for a while, then squawked and stole a piece of bread from one of the pigeons. One of the two finally flew off and landed in a nearby tree.
Just another day in the city.

I use to live inland and would regularly ducks crossing at pedestrian crossings to get from one pond to another. Fantastic sight! You’re right. Another day in the city.

I love seeing exotic birds in the city. It’s a great reminder that we’re not as alone (on a species level) as we like to think.
