On LiveJournal, I run a drabble prompt community called 100 Word Stories. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, a drabble is a piece of writing consisting of exactly 100 words. Every other Sunday I provide at least one new prompt, and community members are welcome to write as many drabbles as they like to these prompts (or to any other existing ones).
Writers reading here, feel free to join us there (I think you can join with OpenID) or if you like, you can write to the prompts here or in your own blog. As an example, today’s prompts are song, fairy tale, and thick as thieves. I’d love for you to join in and play along.
In honor of the invitation, here’s mine, based on the prompt “song:”
She didn’t know why the ocean never sang to her the way it did to him. What she did know intimately was that he moved to the water’s beat, danced with it, and some time ago had undoubtedly made a deal with the devil to sell his soul to the sea. All this happened in ways that a stubborn land-based creature like her could never understand.
If only things could be different.
Stay here with me, she pleaded, but the request fell on deaf ears. The siren call of the waves had already worked its magic, and he was gone.
